Its a valid question, for sure. But all I can see is, "Splatoon suxx because its not a brown shooter". Not trying to put words in your mouth, its just my inner fanboy rage shining through..
It would be nice to have a proper example of such a situation, where a game started out .. not-a-brown-shooter and then turned into one, or the other way around. See how people would react. I don't think we'll ever get to see that though, not on a large enough scale.
Lets say we check all the stats 3 months after the release of splatoon, then turn back the hands of time and change the game to be more.. "mature"... and give that version 3 months. It would be very interesting.
Personally, (if it wasnt obvious :) ) I like the game because of its looks. If it looked like every other shooter, it would (IMO) also feel like every other shooter. And we already have PLENTY of those.
