Shoulder buttons.

Actually, they did have practical value. It gave the SNES gamepad six buttons, which was indispensible for some games, particularly fighting games. There's a reason why they've been a standard feature of gamepads ever since. Every modern gamepad is basically a variation of the Dual Analog gamepad, which was the original PS1 gamepad with two analog sticks added, and that was in turn just an SNES gamepad with an extra pair of shoulder buttons.

I remember when the snes came out and I held the controller for the first time and it felt so awkward I hated it.  Then street fighter 2 came out. . . But yeah, if something becomes an industry standard then I don't think it can be called a gimmick.
