wow that is very odd.  could that be some sort of licensing reason?  something in the contract?  but why would you have a clause like that "may not depict characters on box art" that makes no sense.

come to think of it, Brawl didn't have Sonic on its cover either.

It probably has something to do with licensing the characters for use in advertisements. Box art counts as advertising I suppose. What's odd is that I guess all the trailers we've seen and the demo and the tournament didn't fall under the same category?

Regardless of the reason, Nintendo should have pushed for it.
