Did EA mishandle the Titanfall IP?

Soon we will live in a world where TF2 is said and the first thing that comes to mind is Titanfall 2 rather than Team Fortress 2.

Yeah, maybe EA screwed up, but that's easier to see after it happens. Not as easy to predict what would happen before.
