I think the battle for second place=the battle to become the secondary console. Personally I think the Wii U will win that fight, because if you are to get two consoles you are more likely to get ps4+Wii U or Xbox One+Wii U, than you are to get PS 4+Xbox One.
Just look at the Wii (and no, I don't think the Wii U will have Wii-like success,) it became the secondary console of the 7th gen and won 7th gen. Now, I hardly think the Wii U will win 8th gen, but it still think it has a fair shot at finishing in 2nd place.
