The gameboy was a huge name back then and then the DS came out of nowhere and outsould every gameboy.

This will sound stupid, but it's because of the dual screens. They can't really call it something else until they get rid of two screens without destroying backwards compatibility. Unless they can find a way to go back to one screen while still being able to play old DS-brand games, DS will stay.

Or they'll make three screens.
