The coin item is probably the single most successful balancing effort made. The person in second place can now actually find opportunities to hit the person in the lead with red shells, as opposed to Mario Kart 7 where the person in the lead could have a banana peel protecting them as well as a Tanooki Leaf in their pocket. The person in the lead also never actually got an item that wasn't able to defend them, meaning that blue shells had to be more common and more powerful for the other racers to catch up.
Getting coins at sixth place may be annoying, but so is getting one mushroom at last place and getting a green shell at third. Another thing I find annoying is when people steal stars from me in Mario Party but, at the end of the day, sometimes having good luck and sometimes having bad luck makes the game more interesting and fun. And if you can never overcome struggles, you don't deserve to win.
This is directed at everyone who has ever complained about the items in Mario Kart 8, not the OP specifically. As for the OP's other points I agree with every one of them. Well, except for the last one. Mario Kart Wii never caught my interest.
