As for the coins, though, they can be strategic. The miniboost you get from using the coin item means you can choose to hold on to it until the red shell comes, and then get two of the three lost coins back, as well as a miniboost to help you get up to speed that much quicker.
Of course i'll dump the coin when i get to the next item box, but it's not a total waste, even if you're in first place with 10 coins already.
