This is pretty much the situation.  People scream "I'll get a 3DS instead" but for what?  If Mario isn't your fancy nothing on the thing is.

I wouldn't quite say that (I just bought one and I don't really care about Mario), but there's a misconception that the 3DS is just swimming in games while the Vita dies a death. The 3DS does have a pretty good slate of more mainstream titles - your Dragon Quests, Monster Hunters, Harvest Moons, Ace Attorneys, and Level-5 stuff - which together with first party games have kept sales reasonably healthy. But those are all safe bets, and beyond those franchises, third parties aren't really interested in the 3DS, either. The massive difference in install base amounts to maybe one game a year on average from the likes of Capcom or Square, as opposed to the big fat nothing they give the Vita. But the kinds of games that drew me to the DS and PSP last gen (and to the PS1 and PS2 before that) are even more scarce on the 3DS than they are on the Vita.

This is a pretty good summary of the situation as I believe it. I like my 3DS and have played a bunch of great games, but there really isn't a big difference between the two libraries.
