The reason PS3 does not have the Japanese game support that PS2 did

When compared to a console like the Wii which is able to make the PS2's lifetime profits (thus far) in just a six month period, a console like the PS3 (which is far less profitable than the PS2 and has already thrown away all the PS2's and part of the PS1's profits) begs the question, "why bother?". With Blu-Ray already established as the winner of the HD format wars, investors in Sony at the very least have to be asking, what is the point of trying to compete in the gaming industry when they've not only lost so much just because of the PS3, but that a console like the Wii can sell more for less yeilding a greater profit thus far than nearly all of Sony's gaming devices combined.

The only encouragement Sony might have to stay in gaming is Microsoft's parallel questionable success who has only recently just broken even with gaming and is still in the hole in the bigger picture. Even if the PS3 can become profitable faster than the 360, how long will it take for them to make back the decade's worth of profits lost by the PS3 before they can start gaining ground again? the PS3 might as well be Sony starting over in gaming, and honestly that might be a healthy perspective for them to take.

Frankly, I don't think Sony's gameplan is that in-depth. I think they're coasting.
