To be honest, i feel like Nintendo tried to do it at the last minute. Sony was bringing a lot of features throughout the years to PSN before introducing the paid service.
That had to be what it was. That whole online thing is harder to develop and sustain than it looks on the surface. Wasn't Nintendo going to let somebody else build and maintain their whole online infrastructure? Right before the Wii U came out?
