He meant that if a girl absolutely cannot get over the fact that Link is a male, she can imagine a different character and completely ignore Link's masculine voice, masculine clothing, and relationships (many romantic relationships have been implied throughout the series).

Link the character is male. Aonuma admits it when he refers to him as a "him". And I can assure you, it's not translator error. The Japanese words for "him", "her", and "them" are very distinguishable.
