It is Link and was confirmed as Link. The debate so far has been whether or not Link was strictly male, or female, or was meant to be perceived as either. Eiji Aonuma has said time and time again that links gender is entirely up to the player to decide. Polite or not the character is clearly ambiguous. Hence all the debate that's been going on. If it was strictly a female he would have come out and said it is strictly a female. If it was strictly a male he would have come out and strictly said it was a male. He would not have said it was up to the player to decide and the character design would be clear as it has been in past games and not cause any confusion.
