It is Link and was confirmed as Link. The debate so far has been whether or not Link was strictly male, or female, or was meant to be perceived as either. Eiji Aonuma has said time and time again that links gender is entirely up to the player to decide. It represents the player so if the player is female and chooses to see Link as female she is right.
