everything needs to be different. if a game is open world its empty and boring to walk through. if a game is semi open world its bad because it isnt fully open and it doesnt have the intensty of linear games. if its linear its bad because you can explore and walk around where ever you want. 

Yeah. Games get an advantage from being linear. Better set pieces, better graphics and you can keep a better focus on story. A game should not be penalised for being linear.
