It's not "months and months". The game is releasing in Japan in September, meaning less than a month delay from the most likely release date they intended. And games sell better during the holidays, but releasing both games simultaneously is a bad idea, because they'll eat into each others' sales. But too far apart, and one of the two will have reduced sales due to release period. One is releasing in early October, the other in late November or early December. This gives a comfortable 2 month window.

Bottomline, 3DS's online is not the issue! Just because they got the online down for the 3DS doesn't mean they can just copy paste for Wii U, hence MK8's online not running as well as MK7's. Also they're gonna hurt each other's sales regardless of when they're released.
