The original Pikmin sold about 1.6 million copies. Even if you assume all of the NPC copies sold to people who hadn't played a Pikmin game on GC, it gets to about 2.25 million. If Pikmin 3 gets into the hands of a lot of people who hadn't played a Pikmin before, it could awaken an interest in the game.

So the question isn't "does this prove there's already a demand for the game", it's "does this boost demand for the franchise".

Any way you look at it, there's no good reason to make more Pikmin.
