Never cheated beyond using a guide and even they aren't something I really use anymore
The first time I got into Zelda I had to use gamefaqs, ideas such as exploding plant life and boomerangs that could carry objects seemed unusual. But once I got used to the game it was more rewarding to complete without help.
The only time I consult gamefaqs now is when facing the puzzles that involve sliding squares to form a picture. I've never been able to do them, even those tiny ones that drop out of Christmas crackers... too frustrating.
