I blame Legacy of Kain / 3D Prince of Persia, myself. They took the platformer label and applied it to something more fitting of the description "struggle to scale a ziggurat then swear like a soldier when you miss a jump or QTE and must waste another half an hour just to get back to where you made a mistake". But "Platformer" rolls off the tongue better.
