Disagree on that last point. The only Pokemon that can really be considered Overpowered Megas are MegaGengar and MegaKangaskhan. Other than that, Megas are a viable part of the competitive community that have altered it in very interesting and fun ways. And the reason why they're not completely overpowered is that they cannot hold an item along with their Mega-Stone. Non Megas can still hold very important items like Life Orbs, Focus Sashes, Choice Items, Leftovers, while Megas cannot. So this tradeoff is very important and still gives non-Megas roles to play.

Ask TBone how much my non-MegaMandibuzz cared about his MegaCharizard X.

Megas also give previously forgotten Pokemon another chance to shine in the competitive enviornment. So it's neat to see guys like Houndoom, Aggron, and Kangaskhan back in the spotlight.

That's my main gripe with Megas. Several of the Pokemon that have Megas already have their third stage and are already quite powerful and can hold their own, and others don't even have a second stage evolution. If they wanted to get these Pokemon back into the competitive environment then they could've just introduced a new evolution, not use some gimmicky mechanic that only works during battle.

The trade-off for having a Mega in your party was, arguably, made because GameFreak knew these Pokemon would be OP/quite powerful compared to normal Pokemon. The trade-off wouldn't be necessary if they just gave normal Pokemon normal evolutions.
