I am expecting a new controller for the 360, introduced by E3.

I think it's a good idea because:

- can open the machine up to the "motion controls" markets
- GH3/Rock Band show that "mini markets" on the platforms can be successful
- can bring new exposure to the console without the expense of an entirely new console
- can refine/expaqnd upon what SONY/Nintendo have done, and do it better.

I will buy one if this happens.

I think theres 3 options here.

Sixaxis clone - Exact same shape, Pro has full compatibility with old shape, cheap to make. Con - Too similar, don't want to be seen to just copy Sony.

Breakapart - Microsoft has their sidewinder type controls, I think they've even built a breakapart one. Pro - Innovative, distinctive from the other offerings. Flexible, can be changed to add new bits to it for different games. Could retain the shape for current Xbox games as well and be of similar form factor and design. Can work with Wii ports, encourages crossplatform between the Wii and the Xbox. Cons - Expensive perhaps? Also could be damaged, needs to be robust.

Hybrid - Something like a pointer and wiimote sixaxis built in to a standard controller. Could have a handle able to be attached to it. Same as above for possible Wii ports. Simple to make, but a question on how well motion and two handed controls work together.

How does that sound? I think they would go Breakapart really. They need to be innovative at this point, not just follow the leader. Heck, if they can out-Wii the Wii they could take this console generation with the right developer support. They could capitalise on the success of the Wii, and capture the good 3rd party games that are coming to the Wii. Excellent bundle for the Xbox Arcade to compete with the Wii. :)

I like the sound of the break apart.

There was rumblings of an RTS controller a couple of years ago...

What a new controller would also show (to me anyway) is a prolonged committment to the current platform.
