I don't see how the Wii can suck your bandwidth, it uses a little of it, except perhaps when downloading games or updates.
One thing I noticed, is that if you use DHCP (automatic discovering of your IP address and other network settings), it constantly seek updates at your DHCP server (or perhaps I badly configured it, but I don't think so, my other hosts don't do that).
So I switched back to static configuration.
