Hahaha..... Trust me, do the numbers without the handhelds. You will see for yourself that every gen since the NES, home console install base has increased by around 20/30% with each new generation. every single one.
As for handhelds, I have personally never bought a handheld in my life. I hate them. And it doesn't surprise me that they are losing their appeal. Smartphones are a natural replacement to them, it skinda how you don't see anyone buying ipods anymore either. I personally felt, that having looked at the smartphone industry the single most stupid thing sony has done in a while is make the PSV.
