That's a naive way at looking at the industry. In reality, overlap is in the majority, and PC gamers who already have machines that outspec this generation, which is not a small niche at all, typically buy consoles solely because of exclusives. If something is on PC, let alone steam, then that is one less reason to buy to console. That is why it hurts sales, it might not be directly measurable, but we know it will have an effect.

The greater issue is that this doesn't become a regular thing, which is why the QB rumor is troubling.

That is probably the biggest risk, if Xbox exclusives get the stigma of only being timed exclusives, ofc its gonna have to happen a lot more times for that to happen.

Yeah, so many Xbox-exclusives which were only time-exclusives in the long run:

  • Halo 1
  • Knights of the Old Republic
  • Fable 1
  • Sudeki
  • Halo 2
  • Jade Empire
  • Ninja Gaiden
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins
  • Saints Row series
  • Dead Rising seies
  • Gears of War 1
  • Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
  • Mass Effect 1
  • Alan Wake
  • Braid
  • State of Decay

Not to forget those "console-exclusive" titles, where exclusivity meant "not on PlayStation / Wii":

  • Prey
  • Frontlines: Fuel of War
  • Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
  • Splinter Cell: Conviction
  • Fable 3
  • The Witcher 2

If you have a good PC and some patience, you don't really need and Xbox-console (except the Forza series, most Gears-of-War games and the newer Halo-titles).
