I've been consistently impressed by the item balance in Mario Kart 8. EAD did its homework.
That being said, I have noticed the deadliness of red shells, especially after last night when one clipped me before the finish line. Part of me misses the good ol' Double Dash!! days when I could dodge red shells more often than not, but I also appreciate Nintendo's efforts to recalibrate the game. I thinks it's been a home run.
