It's too early to start discussing success v's failure when the generation isn't half over yet. 360 is a couple of years old and the PS3/Wii 7months behind it.
However, I would think MS are very happy with the state of the 360 so far. It's surpassing it's predecessor, dominating in the U.S and U.K. It has vastly improved its sales in Japan and sales trends are tending upwards. It has recieved alot of multi platform support, many were previous PS exclusives and the XBL service is attracting a very high user rate. Add all that together with being a profitable system and MS are onto a winner.
Whether or not MS achieved it's goals is something we'll probably never know.
