When the scale for measuring has only 10 (11 if you count 0) marks then we can't seriously call 10/10 perfect - it's just better than a 9. There is also a precedent for scale breaking - the now ubiquitous, "He gave 110%" reaction to an outstanding sporting/athletic performance. While one could argue that you can't give more than 100% effort how do we categorise a performance beyond our expectations? It's not unreasonable in that light to call that performance 110% - he's raised the bar of what should be expected of him in the future. Likewise it's not unreasonable to view an 11/10 as recognition of a game that raises the bar for the award of top marks. Of course it's hyperbole, but hyperbole has it's place and this could be an appropriate situation - an exaggeration to make a point. The point being that this was the best game he has ever played. On the other hand it could just be bollocks! |
I accepted that 11/10 and 21/20 reviews were "jokes"..but shit, this just made a whole lot of sense
