While I might not agree 100% with the entire post, this bolded sentence is absolutely true. For the last 10-15 years, an average European (not a gamer, but just an average person) calls any console Playstation. Those a bit older, who have heard of gaming in the late 80s, early 90s (at the time when gaming wasn't somainstream and was still perceived as child's play) still refer to them as Nintendo. XBox just doesn't have brand recognition or any presence in people's minds. If they want to play a video game, once they go to the store, they see a Playstation on the shelf and don't even take notice of an XBox sitting right next to it. Most stores that sell games and other entertainment will have about 2 acres of shelf space with PS games, and a small, poorly lit corner with green boxes, usually hidden behind NDS and PSP games.
P.S. Oh, and all handheld consoles are still called Gameboys :) |
Correct, I have even noticed big newspapers making this mistake, calling consoles Playstations and when mentioning Xbox they think it's a Nintendo console ( this really happened). The dominance of Playstation in Europe has more to do with brand recognition instead of being an superior product
