When I thought about it, it looks more like people correlated the colors with their meaning than the other way around, lol...  The Maneki-neko catsuit stomp move turning into a golden statue makes the most obvious sense, while the colors of the catsuits doesn't quite add up.  Success in academics?  You really think they were thinking about that 30 years ago when they made Luigi green?


But I think it can explain why Mario is yellow, he's supposed the be Nintendo's money maker, lol.

And it makes sense why Rosalina is black.

Yeah, I think Toad, Luigi and Peach accidentally had colors with meanings.
