Nintendo still has the casual support, they just need to heavily promote it this holiday and get that one big game that they will go crazy over!

I think that a gamepad less Wii U could be a viable option. But....just so you know. MK8 seriously uses the gamepad. Also I would seriously suggest that know one plays the Wii U without the gamepad. It is just too awesome!

As much as I want them to, I have this irksome suspicion that Zelda U will have mandatory use of the gamepad.  Aonuma has this thing about using incorperating new hardware into everything.
