I think I agree.
They'll probably want to squeeze everything out of the western markets before replacing it completely. They'll also probably will still come out a third redesign before that, like a 3DSHD (with sharper, better screens). Overall, it's still powerful and feature-rich enough to last a while longer.
I think they'll want to wait until the WiiU's life is over, around 2017, to simultaneously release both a new handheld and a new console. Considering their talks of combining the divisions, the two pieces of hardware would basically be the same and games would be cross-compatible. The handheld will probably be a 'lite' version of their home-console. That's what I predict anyway
