Indeed, and none of the prosecutions under this have been for "explicit sexual depictions" AFAIK.
Plenty of people can be uncomfortable of explicit "hetero" depictions in public, that issue is totally distinct.
Fixating on specific sex acts not inherent to "heteros" or "homos" in the first place, also is besides the point.
Really just sad for Russia, because this can only alienate those "homos" and motivate them to leave Russia,
or worse, cultivate negative habits like drugs or whatever due to being shut out from normal decent society.
Clearly undermines efforts to deal with worse forms of homophobic reaction, e.g. beatings and discrimination.

I really do feel the Western mainstream media-fed reaction to this was horribly counterproductive though,
and definitely not motivated by a desire for constructive betterment of "homos"' situation in Russia,
rather just a self-righteous villification of Russia for very different aims having nothing to do with this topic.
