Japan isn't the market it used to be even 5-6 years ago.

Nintendo will probably launch a hybrid handheld/console in 2016-17 in Japan, that will likely have some success, but in the post-iPhone world its probably best to temper expectations.

Well, it looks like we will have to agree to disagree... As I said, people said the same about the crash and we are still discussing consoles today. About the hybrid, it's just a rumour and it has severe flaws on it. The original rumour actually had specs that simply didn't make sense, simply wasn't a working hardware design.

Japanese market is not equivalent to what the US market was post-Atari crash and the Japanese demographics are very different these days too. Low birth rate and a huge growing senior citizen population, not ideal for gaming growth ... well not in traditional gaming spaces anyway. Smartphone gaming will continue to grow there and cannibalize a large chunk of more casual/female players I think.

It's not that hard to satisfy their gaming fix, and smartphones do that for cheap/free on a device that a person has on them all the time ... consoles are just antiquated by comparision.
