What has been happening in Japan is declining birth rates, so that first hits Nintendo (because their brand is trusted and thus their systems are bought for children without a second thought) and later on Sony (because they feed off the audience that Nintendo brought into gaming by converting them to the "cooler" brand). Nintendo's solution was to cater to older audiences in which they succeeded, like mentioned in the previous paragraph. However, generation 8 features a Nintendo that decided to fight with Sony over a declining market, both in home consoles and handhelds.

I completely forgot about the problem you presented. This is actually quite serious to many things outside of gaming as well. Japan is becoming quite old in it's average age and things need to change.
