Nintendo is not directly competing with Sony and MS. As much as 3rd parties help PS and XB, they really are secondary and also disposable when it comes to Nintendo consoles. The Wii was somewhat of an exception though for home consoles. Nintendo's games have always appealed quite a lot to the "casual" market. That combined with the Wii's general appeal to them was the perfect combo.
It's the core market that need the variation brought by a combination of 1st and 3rd parties, which is the only market we really have now that the casuals have run off to play flappy turd bird ¬_¬
