Why do people make such a big deal about backwards compatibility?

I wouldn't pass on a system because it lacked backward compatibility, but there's no denying it's a nice feature. I recently had to buy a new TV stand after I unboxed my PS4 because there was no more room. Would have been nice to be able to retire my PS3.

So it's not a deal breaker but it is a nice gesture to fans who've already invested lots of money in previous gen games and accessories.
