Nintendo not having a conference this year isn't a mistake. The reality of it all is that people who watch E3 mostly watch it online. The conferences are for the press. Nintendo is simply by passing the press and delivering E3 news directly to us gamers. That's all. This seems like a good idea to me. Nintendo wouldn't need to worry about on-stage glitches and technical problems. They wouldn't need to worry about all the other things that happen during live shows.
Who do I think is going to win this year's E3? Well, my opinion won't mean much because I'm already a Nintendo fan. However, based on some of the rumors coming out, I'm hearing Sony and Microsoft are planning to use this E3 as a way to warm up for next E3 - partly because several games are going to be delayed; many of which until 2015. Meanwhile, Nintendo has some pretty heavy hitters coming out this year. So, it seems pretty obvious to me that Nintendo may win.
