In terms of "ever", the answer is clearly no. The time leading up to the launch of the NES, Nintendo need to claim that the NES was a robot toy with Rob rather than a video game console in order to get the NES in stores. Know their are McDonald's Happy Meal toys that come with the Nintendo themed toys. Pokemon has become a gateway game for JRPGs in North America, which has lead its yearly releases to surpass 10 million in sales.
The issue at hand is not that Nintendo is dying, it is that console gaming is dying and PC game is thriving. We are seeing the "second video game crash", only this time it is PCs and not arcades that are providing a better experience at a cheaper price.
