Imo it's quite clear they're going to get another redesign out. Sales are slowing down worldwide, so they need something to spur sales.
There aren't many games that will do that in any significant way, as basically all system sellers are out already (2D Mario, 3D Mario, Pokemon, 3D Zelda, top-down Zelda, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Layton, etc.) Sure there are more to come (Smash, Pokemon remakes, Tomodachi Life), but I doubt those would significantly impact hardware sales for a sustained period of time.
Nothing to boost interest and sales like a new model. It'll happen.
