Going fully digital has many advantages, but also has some major drawback.
Remember this?
You will stop encountering random people in line have a nice chat with and swap ID's with on top of that lines allways make a good impression of how hyped a game is when arguing on the internet.

Aye, I remember going to buy "The Burning Crusade" and "Wrath of the lich king" at our games stores midnight openings here, was great and met a load of other warcraft players from the same town. Bought Pandaland and even Warlords from the blizz store already.... feels just so boring in comparison to that midnight event feel... literally files ready on my PC to play it when the content is available... but there is no event to its launch.

quite possibly the reason it went downhill

It did? Warcraft subs were up the last 2 quarters afaik. Or do you mean in some other way such as how its game play is now easy because it's possible to select a version of raiding which is basically every boss neutered?
Not really sure is there any other game which came out in the ERA of the PS2 still being played and enjoyed as much as Warcraft, unless there is some PC game I'm not thinking of.
