A reasonable estimate of processing power would have the difference between the PS2 and Wii being similar in scale to the difference between the Wii and the XBox 360/PS3 ... Certainly, it has made sense to target both platforms so far, but as the PS2 fades away it will not make sense to make a Wii game that is less competitive (in comparison to games that take advantage of the Wii) in order to target a platform with small software sales. |
This is a reasonable example. Consider also that the Wii has several times the memory that the PS2 does.
I've got a PS2 and, of course, I connect it via component like I do with my Wii. And the best PS2 games graphically don't even compare with games like Super Mario Galaxy which, incidentally, looks good for a next gen game regardless of the platform its on.
The reason the PS2 gets a lot of development as well is because it has a huge userbase. Development for the platform is well known, the tools are there and tested. Everyone has done it and everyone is ready to do it.
