I generally agree with rol in this thread.
I think too many people here are too short-sighted. A lot of you guys can't see that a LOT more goes into these things than what you see upfront. Assuming Nintendo has done nothing to try and do SOMETHING about the Wii U is incorrect. They have done a good few things, but most of you guys pass it off as it's only natural for them to do so. However, that's not necessarily the case. The way Nintendo did it was in fact in retaliation to the poor sales.
I honestly don't care to join much into the sales debate of hardware anymore because of the high amount of lack of foresight many have. Just because someone predicts correctly or incorrectly the approximate sales of a hardware beforehand also is in no way an indicator you know what's going on. A lot of that attitude is pretty prevalent here, and I find it a little annoying.
I personally don't think the decisions made by either side were stupid. The market is not that easy to read. For the most part, the proclamations that certain ideas were bad are done so in hindsight (and confirmation bias).
