I think MSNZ are being a little liberal with their use of "approaching 50,000". They had sold 37,000 by mid-Jan according to GfK, so I doubt that they've increased their install base by 50% in 2 months. They sold around 3,000 in Q1 2007, so they're probably closer to 40,000 than 50,000. He's probably referring to shipped units, which would put it closer to 50,000.
360 is doing OK in New Zonyland, they're still ahead of PS3, and Wii isn't really competing, but it still has a long way to go until it catches the original Xbox (140k).
Thanks for posting, there's a thread with NZ numbers Here if you're interested.
"I think thats a good number for New Zealand, I read somewhere on the internets last year PS2 had only 200,000. Well done MS."
It's closer to 500,000.
LTD:
PS2 - 470,000 (End 07)
XBX - 140,000 (End 05)
PSP - 39,267+ (Nov 06 - Dec 07 only)
360 - 37,000 (Mid Jan 08)
PS3 - 20,857 (End 07)
NDS - 12,000 (End Q1 07)
GCB - 10,000 (End 05)
WII - 6,000 (End Q1 07)
PS2 still dominates NZ, last year it outsold all other consoles combined.
