Considering most companies, if not all, don't ever reveal the minutae of their strategies, can we go by their E3 presence and late life console sales?  If Nintendo suddenly sustains a late system cycle of momentum, and E3 announces titles that have been secretly in development for some time now, can we agree that Nintendo was clearly waiting for the right time?

And I'd say the fact that Nintendo does crazy things is actually a pretty decent argument, we really never know what to expect with Nintendo, do we?

Looking at sales trends in Japan i'd say PS4 hype is dead and buried allready. So as far as Japan is concerned, your theory should be spot on. Of cource that could change when FFXV is released, but thats way in the future. Whats going to happen is that Nintendo will own Japan on both the home console front as well as the traditional handheld front in 2014. And it will begin with Mario Kart 8. After it's release the WiiU should remain ahead of PS4 in weekly sales for the rest of the year.

2015 will probably see 3rd party japanese publishers releasing big gun after big gun on the PS4 in an attempt to stop Nintendo from gaining too much power in that market.
