Don't get me wrong! I do love 3D World and Mario Galaxy ( Galaxy being my favorite game of all time), but I simply miss the feeling of exploring the open levels and finding secrets and such!

Oh, absolutely! I loved 3D World and Galaxy 1. But I know exactly what you mean about less linearity and more open exploration. We're on the same page! :D
