Please stop repeating this lie, even "supposedly" tagged. Mario Kart has always been 720p from the first screenshots we had maybe one year ago to the screenshots that are currently uploaded everywhere on Internet now.

Also the game has zero AA, very poor textures, low geometry and is just saved graphically by the usual Nintendo sharp colors & art direction. Technically it's very similar to Little big planet karting on PS3 and very far away from GT5, GT6 on PS3 and Forza 4 on X360, also at 60fps.

The game will probably be great, fun and have great reviews but won't be remembered for its graphics, like all previous Mario Kart.

LBP Karting on PS3 falls far short of Mario Kart 8; it runs at 30fps with drops below, and has weak lighting.

And GT5 and GT6 still contain warmed up PS2 car models, have some pretty ugly assets here and there, and can't maintain 60fps or v-sync.

Here's an interesting read on GT6

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-vs-gran-turismo-6

Here's some of my favorite parts:

"If Gran Turismo 6 is the final last-gen title from Polyphony Digital, it could be suggested that the developer still hasn't met its objective set forth almost a decade ago: to deliver a 60 frames-per-second racing simulation at 1080p on PlayStation 3. In fact, generally speaking, performance remains smoother in both PS2 and PSP versions of the game." - Eurogamer

"When GT4 was released on PlayStation 2 it felt like something close to a complete, finished product from end to end: there was the sense that everything the team set out to accomplish - bar online racing - had been achieved. With Gran Turismo 6, we simply don't get that same feeling - the engine created for Gran Turismo on PlayStation 3 has never quite fully delivered and Polyphony's ambitions were seemingly too high to be delivered on last-gen tech." - Eurogamer

Lol, I'll leave it at that.
