Mushroom dodging too? First they create an item that destroys them, now you can dodge them? Slowly but surely, they're getting the balance with blue shells right. Blue shells are a very needed item, and I hope they never totally get rid of them, but having some defenses against them leaves little room to complain. Where as before there was no strategy involved, just the luck of staying in first place long enough to finish before you're blue shelled, now there's strategy, with a fairly common item in the horn that provides a great defense, and a very common item in the mushroom that provides a good defense, so you just need to find one of those and save the item. Items add another layer of strategy to the game, and are a huge part of what makes me like Mario Kart over other racing games.

Actually mushroom dodging (aswell as using Starman and Bullet Bill to tank the hit) was first since we've been able to do it since MKDS, but you're right about everything else! To add to this the second screen tells everyone when someone has a Blue Shell, so it's possible to avoid them by dropping out of first! Of course, most if not all of your opponents will try to do similarly, so quick thinking, high awareness, and fast reflexes are very much needed here! This also makes it so that the Blue Shell can actually aid the person who got it if they're far behind since people will be backing up to avoid being targeted by it. So while the Blue Shell may seem like nothing but herp derp on the surface, there's actually a whole lot of hidden depth to it! I used to hate it and think it was a stupid item like most everyone else, but after playing MK7 I've realized just how awesome it actually is!

Wow, I feel dumb. I've been too poor to afford Mario Kart since Double Dash, where only Starman could tank it, and that was impossible to get while in first place. I've been playing off of friends DS's and 3DS's with Download Play, and I'm super psyched to finally come back, on what looks like the best entry to the series yet. The series has really evolved since DD!
