In Germany this would be at least 5 years in prison up to life long. It wouldn't even matter that it was on his property. It wasn't self defense. The fact that it was a trap and he was going in with killing intent makes this an even stronger offense. There are no laws that protect people from shooting other people. Even in self defense this would be highly scrutinized.

I doubt he will be convicted in the US because in the US there are laws that protect shooters.

Hell in the case in the link, the kids were fleeing the guys house.  That would be illegal and you would go to jail in the vast majority US states.
