That might very well be true, but it's a depressing theory to say the least. It's scary to me that consumers view the WiiU only through a technological lens. You'd think the existence of excellent low-budget, low-tech indie titles and the impressive libraries of older-gen systems, many of which are superior to their counterparts in the seventh and eighth gens, would prove that the steady march of technology has not brought us a better class of video game.
@OP: I own a PS3, X360, PC, PSP, and PS4, in addition to my WiiU. For my WiiU I buy first and second party games and the third party games that perform, arguably, best on WiiU, games like Sonic Racing, Black Ops II, Most Wanted, Skylanders, LEGO, etc.
