The only thing shocking about it is how forthcoming he was with having baited the person.

It's the same law in Germany as it is Montana.

In Germany this would be at least 5 years in prison up to life long. It wouldn't even matter that it was on his property. It wasn't self defense. The fact that it was a trap and he was going in with killing intent makes this an even stronger offense. There are no laws that protect people from shooting other people. Even in self defense this would be highly scrutinized.
I doubt he will be convicted in the US because in the US there are laws that protect shooters.
